Etihad Airways is exploring legal action against the Premier League following the financial rules case involving its partner club Manchester City. The airline has issued a strong public statement rejecting the findings of the independent commission and criticising the league's handling of the process.
Etihad categorically denies any involvement in improper commercial arrangements linked to Manchester City. The airline said it was never consulted or given a chance to provide information during the investigation, despite the published findings reflecting adversely on its reputation.
"Etihad categorically rejects any finding, conclusion or implication that suggests the airline has ever been involved in improper commercial arrangements," the company said.
Etihad argues the Premier League's public communication of the commission's verdict created damaging implications. The airline states it was excluded from the process and that a lack of transparency has harmed its brand. It is now seeking legal counsel on the options available to protect its interests.
The airline has reaffirmed its backing for Manchester City as the club prepares to appeal the verdict. City must lodge its appeal by Friday. Etihad described its relationship with the club as strong and longstanding, referencing its stadium naming rights deal which began in 2011 and was extended on improved terms in 2021.
"Etihad is immensely proud of its longstanding relationship with Manchester City," the airline's statement added.
The independent commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of Premier League financial rules. Club CEO Ferran Soriano has previously described the ruling as an 'opinion' in internal communications.
