The Clarets played three friendlies in the US against FC Cincinnati, Columbus Crew and Real Salt Lake. Interim boss Mike Jackson oversaw the first week of training and those initial matches. Upon returning to England, the side faced Ajax in Amsterdam before hosting Espanyol and Torino at Turf Moor. Despite the relatively high-level opposition, Burnley did not secure a victory, drawing four and losing two of the six matches.
The physical toll became apparent in the early league fixtures.
