Burnley winger Marcus Edwards has switched his international allegiance to Cyprus and received his first senior call-up. The 27-year-old, who qualifies through his mother, has obtained a Cypriot passport and will join the squad for upcoming Nations League games.
Edwards was eligible for France through his father and represented England at various youth levels, from Under-16 to Under-20. He chose to commit to Cyprus as he re-established himself at Turf Moor, having been left out of Burnley's initial 25-man squad before being re-registered to fill a vacant spot. He returned to the starting line-up for the recent 1-1 draw with Derby County, a result that leaves the Clarets 24th in the Championship with four points from eight games.
Several other Burnley players will be away during the three-week break. Hjalmar Ekdal is with Sweden, Oliver Sonne with Peru, and Shurandy Sambo with Curacao. Connor Roberts joins Wales, Zeki Amdouni is with Switzerland, while Max Weiss and Max Alleyne have earned call-ups to the Germany and England Under-21 sides respectively. Cyprus, ranked 124th in the world, face Latvia, Montenegro and Armenia in their upcoming matches.
Burnley return to Championship action with a trip to face 20th-placed Watford on Saturday, October 10.
