A mental health project connected to Burnley, called Strength in Struggles, has launched a wellbeing centre in Whalley with help from ex-player Clarke Carlisle. The former Burnley and Premier League footballer, who currently leads the mental health organisation MIND, was the special guest for the opening ceremony.
The centre is based in the old station building on Station Road in Whalley. It provides no-cost or low-cost events, support meetings, and community gatherings for individuals dealing with mental health issues. Founder Beck House emphasised that the centre is not a medical facility and people do not need a formal assessment to use it. Help offered covers support for parents and relatives, separate groups for women and men, educational sessions, and different types of wellbeing treatments.
Beck House started Strength in Struggles as a community interest company following her own serious mental health episode many years ago when she worked for the Lancashire police force. She was taken into custody under mental health legislation during that time. House stated she has since dedicated herself to using her difficult experience to assist other people. She called the centre a friendly place built to give approachable, useful, and kind help, stating that getting support early and building relationships can be very impactful. The centre aims to be a secure, accepting place where people can talk over a hot drink and begin to improve their wellbeing.
Many individuals came to the opening, with guests from groups across the Ribble Valley area, local officials, relatives, acquaintances, and helpers. The launch shows continuing community work involving people linked to Burnley, providing real support while the club's main team goes through a tough time in their league matches.
