Burnley legend Jay Rodriguez has retired from professional football after a career spanning more than 550 appearances and 150 goals. The 37-year-old striker, born and raised near Turf Moor, confirmed his decision on the I Had Trials Once podcast, citing recurring knee injuries as the primary reason.

He was a central figure in two of the club's most significant promotions. Rodriguez began his senior career at Burnley in December 2007 and was a key part of the squad that reached the 2009 Championship play-off final at Wembley. After a club-record £6m move to Southampton and spells with West Brom, he returned to Turf Moor in 2019 for a reported £10m fee under Sean Dyche. His second spell cemented his legendary status, as he played 182 games, scored 35 goals, and was a regular starter in the side that won the Championship title under Vincent Kompany in the 2022/23 season, securing promotion back to the Premier League.

His time at Burnley was punctuated by memorable moments, including a late Carling Cup semi-final goal against Tottenham Hotspur and a famous strike at Old Trafford in a victory over Manchester United. Across two spells, he made more than 300 appearances for the Clarets.

Persistent knee problems ultimately forced his hand. After leaving Burnley for Wrexham in January 2025, where he helped them achieve promotion, his playing time was severely limited by injuries last term. This followed a history of serious knee issues, including an anterior cruciate ligament rupture in 2014 that sidelined him for 16 months and ended his hopes of going to the World Cup with England, for whom he earned a single cap in 2013.

His retirement comes as his boyhood club faces a tough battle at the other end of the Championship table. Burnley currently sit 22nd with just 10 points from 14 games, having won only once this season. Their recent form shows three draws and two defeats from the last five matches, a run that includes a 1-1 draw away to QPR on Tuesday. The club's record of one win, seven draws and six defeats this season has left them 18 points behind the league leaders. They have scored 18 goals but conceded 26, giving them a goal difference of minus eight. The draw at QPR saw Largie Ramazani, assisted by Jamie Vardy, score Burnley's goal in the 38th minute. Their next fixture is away to Cardiff, who are 18th in the table, on Saturday 7 November. Rodriguez's departure from the playing ranks marks the end of an era for a player who embodied the club's recent history of triumphs and challenges.
