Burnley were held to a goalless draw by Portsmouth at home on Saturday in a Championship match that saw plenty of effort but no goals.

Burnley dominated the statistics, finishing with 52% possession and 18 shots to Portsmouth's five. However, only four of those efforts were on target, all saved by Portsmouth goalkeeper Schmid. The Clarets' expected goals figure of 1.81 highlighted their inability to convert chances, while Portsmouth managed just 0.32. The visitors failed to register a single shot on target against a Burnley defence that kept a clean sheet for the first time in five matches.

The first half was a scrappy affair, with the main flashpoint arriving in the 39th minute. Josh Laurent and Jayden Meghoma were both shown yellow cards after an on-pitch argument. Burnley's best opportunity of the half fell to Lyle Foster, whose header from a Lucas Pires cross was tipped over the bar.

Both managers looked to their benches to change the game after the break. Portsmouth introduced Ebou Adams and Tyrese Shade early in the second period, while Burnley brought on Jaydon Banel for Jamie Vardy just after the hour mark. Further changes saw Josh Cullen and Aaron Ramsey replace Reo Hatate and Andréas Hountondji for the hosts. Despite the fresh legs, clear-cut chances remained scarce. Portsmouth manager John Mousinho was booked for dissent in the 64th minute as frustration grew on both sides.

The point does little to lift Burnley from their precarious league position. Their recent form reads one win, two draws, and two losses from the last five games. They have scored 17 goals this season but conceded 25, giving them a goal difference of minus eight. The clean sheet offers a positive foundation, but the lack of a cutting edge up front is a clear concern with a key run of fixtures ahead.

Attention now turns to a quick turnaround and a trip to Loftus Road on Tuesday night to face Queens Park Rangers.
