Burnley were held to a one-all draw by Wrexham AFC at the STōK Cae Ras, a result played out in front of Sky Sports Plus cameras. Zeki Amdouni put the Clarets ahead early on, only for Jacques Ekomié to level for the home side in the second half.
Burnley took a 26th-minute lead through Amdouni, who was set up by Largie Ramazani, before Ekomié restored parity for Wrexham in the 55th minute, assisted by I. Kabore. The draw did little to ease the pressure on manager Nicky Hayen, whose side had already collected just two points from their opening five Championship matches heading into the trip to north Wales.
Burnley confirmed the signing of Jamie Vardy, the 39-year-old former Leicester City forward, on a free transfer running until the end of the season. Vardy had been in contention for his first appearance in Clarets colours at the STōK Cae Ras, though he was expected to start from the bench rather than force his way straight into the side. The veteran striker had briefly been linked with a move to Wrexham themselves before nothing came of it, with Phil Parkinson's side instead adding Joe Worrall, a former Burnley defender, and Callum O'Hare on deadline day.
Hayen was without Ashley Barnes, Bashir Humphreys, Jordan Beyer and Jaydon Banel through injury, while Dastan Satpaev was also facing a spell on the sidelines. Lucas Pires had been expected to return to contention after completing concussion protocol. Wrexham, for their part, were missing Liberato Cacace, though Ben Sheaf and Nathan Broadhead had been given a chance to prove their fitness before kick-off.
The point at Wrexham was part of a difficult run that has since worsened. Burnley have since lost to Bristol City, drawn with Middlesbrough and lost 3-1 at Swansea City on Saturday, 12 September, leaving them 24th in the Championship on 3 points from seven games, with just eight goals scored and sixteen conceded.
