Maxime Estève credits Vincent Kompany for Burnley development

RB Leipzig's new signing Maxime Estève has praised Vincent Kompany's influence on his career, highlighting the Bayern Munich manager's role in his development during their time together at Burnley. The French centre-back, who joined Leipzig this summer, described Kompany as instrumental in his growth, particularly in defensive skills.

What did Estève say about Kompany?

Estève, speaking to media on Monday, said Kompany was 'very important' to his development. The 24-year-old played under the Belgian during the second half of the 2023/24 Premier League season. 'I learnt a lot from him, particularly when it comes to defence,' Estève said. 'I have great respect for him.'

Why did Estève leave Burnley?

Following Burnley's relegation from the Premier League, Estève saw Leipzig as an opportunity he couldn't pass up. The club finished third in the Bundesliga last season, securing a return to the UEFA Champions League. Estève is embracing the competition for places within the squad, stating, 'If you want to play for a big club, there are lots of top players. Everyone has to fight for their place in the team, and I'm here to do that.'

What's next for Estève?

Estève will now work under Martín Demichelis at Leipzig, who was appointed head coach in July. The Frenchman believes Demichelis' approach to man-management will help bring the best out of the squad. Leipzig begin their competitive campaign away to Eintracht Trier in the DFB Cup on 22 August, before hosting Borussia Mönchengladbach in their Bundesliga opener a week later.
