Burnley forward Lyle Foster has joined Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo on a season-long loan deal. The move includes a $7 million purchase option and was finalized after the South Africa international completed a medical on Tuesday.
Foster departs as Burnley struggle near the bottom of the Championship table. After three games, the Clarets are 23rd with just one point, having lost twice and drawn once. They have scored only four goals while conceding nine, leaving them with a negative five goal difference. The club is already nine points behind early leaders Swansea City.
The agreement sends Lyle Foster to Texas until the summer of 2027. Houston have secured an option to make the transfer permanent for a fee of $7 million. Crucially, the 26-year-old striker will not occupy a designated player spot on the Dynamo's roster, giving the MLS club greater salary budget flexibility. Sources briefed on the situation told reporters, "The Houston Dynamo are finalizing a deal to sign South Africa international forward Lyle Foster on loan from Burnley."
Foster arrived at Turf Moor in 2023 and played a part in the club's promotion-winning Championship campaign that season. He contributed five goals and three assists across 24 Premier League appearances in the 2022-2023 season. Last term, as Burnley were relegated from the top flight, he managed three goals and two assists in 26 league outings, totaling 1,372 minutes on the pitch. The forward, who turns 26 this Thursday, has also been a regular for his country, scoring 10 goals in 28 caps for South Africa.
Houston are strengthening their attack ahead of the MLS playoff push. They added forward Duncan McGuire earlier this summer and have now moved for Foster following the departure of designated player Ezequiel Ponce. The Dynamo also transferred midfielder Jack McGlynn to Stoke City for a fee that could reach $5.5 million. Houston currently sits second in the Western Conference with 39 points from 22 matches, making this a strategic addition for their title ambitions.
Foster's exit comes at a challenging time for Vincent Kompany's squad. The team's early-season form has been poor, and their attacking output is a concern. With only four goals scored in three league games, Kompany will need others to step up. The manager will be assessing his options on our squad page ahead of the Bristol City fixture. The Clarets' current league position, shows the scale of the task facing them this season.
Burnley's focus now shifts entirely to the Championship and finding a way to climb the table. Their next match is at Turf Moor against fifth-placed Bristol City on September 5th.
