Burnley join race for £13m World Cup defender Kojo Peprah Oppong
Burnley are preparing a summer move for Nice centre-back Kojo Peprah Oppong, according to L’Equipe. The 22-year-old Ghanaian defender has attracted interest from European clubs after a breakthrough season in Ligue 1 and appearances at the World Cup.
What happened at Nice last season?
Oppong joined Nice from Swedish side Norrköping for £2.3 million last summer. He exceeded expectations with 43 appearances across all competitions, including five in the Europa League. His only goal came in a 3-1 defeat to Le Havre in August. The defender also made his senior debut for Ghana and featured at the World Cup, coming off the bench against England.
Why is Burnley interested?
Burnley need a new centre-back after Maxime Estève’s £27 million move to RB Leipzig. Oppong’s rapid rise from benchwarmer to Ligue 1 and World Cup starter suggests he could adapt well to the Championship. However, Burnley may also prioritise QPR’s Ronnie Edwards, who has more EFL experience.
What comes next in the transfer saga?
Nice value Oppong between £8 million and £13 million but face financial pressure to sell. Trabzonspor and an unnamed Ligue 1 club are also interested. With Oppong contracted until 2029, Nice may hold out for their asking price.
