Nicky Hayen got off to a winning start in his first competitive match in charge, as Burnley booked their place in the Carabao Cup second round following a penalty shoot-out victory over Notts County. Goalkeeper Max Weiss proved to be the hero in the shoot-out, as the German stopper saved two spot-kicks, with Zian Flemming, Zeki Amdouni, Mike Tresor and Kyle Walker all finding the net to secure the win. Callum Roberts gave County the lead just before half-time, before Flemming then levelled things up two minutes into the second-half with a smart finish. With nothing to separate the two sides at the full-time whistle, the Clarets went on to win in the shoot-out. Burnley started bright and controlled the opening 15 minutes, with the visitors unable to get any real foot on the ball. However, County did enjoy a brief spell of possession of their own midway through the first-half, with Martin Paterson’s side winning a corner, which was cleared away by a crashing Joe Worrall header.
