Burnley FC's Reality Check

Burnley FC's 3-1 defeat to West Brom was a harsh reality check for the Clarets, exposing their lack of Championship readiness and defensive vulnerabilities. The Clarets were brought back down to earth with a bang following what was, bluntly put, a pretty abject display in the West Midlands.

As much as Burnley deserved the plaudits that came their way following their opening day display and inspired late comeback, they must now take the criticism that will now inevitably come their way. The Clarets were far too easy to score against, and opposition sides don't have to work particularly hard to breach their defence.

The Clarets' long run without a defeat - standing at 34 games and stretching back to November 2024 - is now over. Defeats can happen, but it's the manner of this one that will set the alarm bells ringing. Most startlingly of all, this performance exposed the fact that, without a lot of late work being undertaken, this side doesn't look Championship ready.

While West Brom were well worthy of their win, how easy were the goals they scored? How avoidable were they? How often did we see Burnley players getting their bodies in the way and blocking shots? Where was the nous and experience? Nicky Hayen himself admitted this was an “eye opening” performance.

West Brom boss James Morrison, meanwhile, perhaps made the most alarming comment of all, by expressing how, when his side upped the intensity, he knew Burnley simply couldn’t live with it. If that’s going to be a running theme this season, Burnley’s players could be in for a bit of a shock.

Burnley's performance exposed the fact that they are far too easy to score against. Opposition sides don't have to work particularly hard to breach their defence. The Clarets' goalkeeper, Max Weiss, is still yet to fully convince, and the defence continues to look jittery.

The midfield is also a concern, with the Clarets being far too easily overrun and never really getting near the Baggies. They’re lacking a real enforcer type, a true number six who sticks to his position and does all the dirty work, allowing the likes of Josh Laurent and/or Hannibal to venture further forward.

Ugo Raghouber was meant to be that man but he’s endured a tough start to the season, clearly struggling with the pace and demands of the English game. While he deserves the benefit of the doubt given he’s only been here a matter of weeks, he really needs to stop dawdling on the ball and release it within one or two touches.

In attack, meanwhile, while Burnley do carry a threat, too often they make the wrong decision and give the ball away sloppily. Zian Flemming was an obvious miss, but he’s not the type of player who’s going to do it all on his own anyway. He needs service and good service too.

All in all, this was a bit of a reality check for Burnley, something of an early wake-up call. Perhaps that could even end up being a good thing. The Clarets need to get back to basics. While they’re likely to hold a quality advantage over most sides at this level, it counts for nothing if the players aren’t prepared to put in the hard yards, run long and fast and match their opponents’ intensity.

All of that was lacking at The Hawthorns on Sunday and it told, because in truth, the Baggies cruised to a relatively comfortable three points. Now what follows is a crucial week. Not just off the pitch with the final few days of the transfer window, but another three games in the space of eight days, starting with a cup tie at Bradford on Wednesday.
