Burnley have received £38m in compensation from Everton following a Premier League ruling over a breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The Clarets, who finished 19th in the Premier League last season with 22 points (4W-10D-24L), were awarded £26m in damages and £9m in interest after arguing Everton’s financial misconduct impacted their survival chances in the 2021-22 campaign.
A Premier League commission ordered Everton to pay Burnley £35m in June for breaking PSR over a three-year period ending in 2021-22. The Toffees appealed, calling the ruling 'fundamentally flawed in both law and fact', but the Friedkin Group, Everton’s owners, have now injected £38m to cover the payment.
The compensation reflects the financial hit Burnley suffered after relegation, with the club arguing Everton’s overspending distorted competition. Burnley’s recent form (0W-4D-1L in their last five, including a 1-1 draw with Wolves on 24 May 2026) shows their struggle to bounce back, but the £38m boost could aid their recovery.
Everton’s appeal remains unresolved, but the funds have been secured. Burnley, who conceded 75 goals last season (38 scored, -37 difference), will use the compensation to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign, with the new season yet to begin.
